Nan was the daughter of the late ADH and Hughena (MacGillivray) MacKinnon, of Christmas Island. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her sister "Betty" Elizabeth MacLean (Hector) and her brother "Joe" Angus Joseph. She was also predeceased by three nephews; Sandy, Wallace and Archie MacLean.
Nan grew up with the switchboard in her home as well as the local store. It seemed fitting that she went on to work for the Maritime Telephone Company, where she enjoyed a long career, working all across Nova Scotia. After her retirement, she moved back home to Christmas Island to enjoy her home, her family and the occasional friendly card game.
Nan is survived by her best friend, card game partner and sister-in-law; Dolena MacKinnon of Christmas Island. Nan was a special person and loving aunt to her niece Hughena, her nephew Kevin and his wife Denise. She was adored by her great nieces and nephew whom she never failed to cheer on and spoil; Samantha (Andy Burke), Angela (Logan MacKinnon) and Craig (Katie Downard). We wish she had the chance to dote on her great great nieces and nephew as well: Lexie, Cavan and Lucy, as we know they would have loved her so.
Nan was a devoted member of St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island and later St. Andrew’s, Boisdale. She adored visits with hot tea, good meals and the ‘occasional’ ice cream. Her wit and humor kept us laughing and guessing.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home for taking such wonderful care of our Nan and treating her like family during her time there.
