Agnes (Girlie) MacDougall (Petrie) passed away peacefully on January 21, 2015 (‘The Feast of St Agnes’) following a brief illness.
Born to the late Irene and Patrick Petrie in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, on December 2, 1917, she was the eldest of ten children.
Agnes is survived by her daughters Alaine Nadasdi (Sydne) and Patricia MacDonald (Ben Eoin); five grandchildren, Mary Pat, Shane, Kim, Erin and Laura; nine great-grandchildren Makayla, Hannah, Sara, Sawyer, Emily, William, Brier, Thomas, Brennen; and four sisters, Marguerite O'Connor (Halifax), Olive MacDonald (Dartmouth), Naoimi (Bob Puhr, Washington), Anne Smith (Halifax), Patsy (Jim Clancy, Halifax). She was predeceased by husband Jack in 1949, brothers Alonzo, Harold (Bobba), William (Billy) and Stephen (Mac).
Agnes graduated from Central School in New Waterford before attending Teacher’s College in Truro. A lifelong teacher with a career spanning 36 years at Lingan School, Mount Carmel Elementary and Constantine School, she was passionate about reading and especially proud that her grandchildren could read before the age of five.
Known to her friends and family as Girlie (a nickname given by her beloved ‘Pa’) Agnes was recognized as the matriarch of the family. She enjoyed playing duplicate bridge, sewing, knitting, baking and crossword puzzles; She was a voracious reader, a history buff and a staunch Liberal. Industrious throughout her long life, she opened her cherished Ben Eoin bungalow to friends and family for countless happy summers. Her sharp wit, humour and fortitude will be remembered.
Cremation has taken place, there will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St.
Theresa’s Church with Father Tom MacNeil officiating on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 10 a.m.
