In 1959 Lorene married Robert Archibald MacKenzie, who passed in 2004. She deeply treasured Robert and together they raised four sons: Francis (Gladys), Robert Jr. (Kim), Rousell (Caryl Leigh) and Jean-Marc. She is survived by her 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild who were her source of joy and who were always remembered in her daily prayers: Taylor, Connor, Leah, Stefanie, Rousell, Michelle, Jayce, Collin, Robbyne, Jordan, Anthony, Robert, Matthew, Theodore, Elizabeth, Allison, and Rachel; and great-granddaughter Calla. Lorene’s family always knew they were in her prayers.
Lorene, the second youngest of Michael and Hilda (Landry) McKinnon’s seven children was proudly raised on Rockdale Avenue with fond memories. Predeceased by siblings Robert (Madeline), John, MD (former wife Mary and spouse Berta), Marie (late Frank Burke), Gregory (late Beverly), Helene (late Carson MacKenzie) and she is survived by her brother Michael MacKinnon, MD (Mary) who cleverly introduced Robert to Lorene.
Lorene was faithfully supported and loved by sisters-in-law Anne (Elmer Syms), and Mary (Peter Bren), brothers-in-law Fr. Joe, Hector (Meryl), and predeceased by Gerard (Mary).
After graduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1956, Lorene dedicated her life to her family, faith, and many friends. Her daily devotion, in her faith, was a strength and her fun loving compassionate, and cherished time was spent with her family and her childhood friend Caroline.
Lorene and Robert travelled frequently to see their children and families – a foundation of their genuine love shared. She actively shaped how her boys were raised by being a cherished role model for all her family. She will be profoundly missed, as will her unfailing affection for always phoning as well as singing to others on special cherished occasions.
She was a passionate enthusiast, as was seen in her caring and serving of others. As her sons moved forward in life, Lorene, with a warm heart, affectionately reconnected with others through her nursing reunions, friends, and her parish ministries, and generosity guided her ideals as she touched people in sincere ways.
She loved travelling Cape Breton with Robert attending concerts, plays, ceilidhs, dancing, hockey games, and the beaches of the Island. Riverview High School events, and family celebrations were always welcomed and were lovingly done together. 25 plus years at Knightswood farm in Coxheath held significant memories for Lorene as was noted in her visit to the farm a few days earlier with her friend Marion.
To all who brought prayer, comfort, and love into our precious mother’s life – Thank You! and may God continue to bless you all!
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on July 6, 2021 – Robert’s birthday, with interment to follow.
In lieu of flowers, a turn of kindness to brighten someone’s day during these challenging times, is an act Lorene would appreciate.
