John E. Midwood Jr., “Jack,” age 82, of Swansea, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013 in St. Anne’s Hospital. He was the husband of Louise A. (Manning) Midwood to whom he has been married for the past 61 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late John E. Midwood Sr. and Beatrice (Hathaway) Midwood, he had been a longtime Swansea resident and also resided in Kentucky, Tennessee, and California for a short period of time.
A graduate of Joseph Case High School, class of 1948, he was Captain of their Championship baseball team. A Veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Korean Conflict as Sergeant and was a paratrooper in the 11th airborne division stationed at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. After being discharged from the service he received an athletic scholarship and attended the Austin Peay University in Clarksville, TN where he majored in English and minored in history and received his bachelor’s degree.
After college he played professional baseball for several farm league teams throughout the United States. He worked as a service representative for New York Life Insurance Company and Blue Cross Insurance Company of Southern California. When returning to Swansea he worked as a machinist at the EG & G Sealol Company.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons; John Midwood and his wife Dara of Mattapoisett, Donald Midwood and his companion Anne Foster-Gazda of Swansea, Michael Midwood and his wife Deanne of Somerset, and four grandchildren, Zachary, Mitchell, Sarah, and Allie Midwood.
