IN EVER LASTING MEMORY
Born in June 1927 in Fredericton, NB, Louis Sterling Lawrence passed away peacefully in Surrey, BC on October 18, 2013 at the age of 86. Louis was the son of Mr. Woodford Smith Lawrence and Mrs. Emma Augusta Lawrence of Fredericton, NB, both of whom are predeceased as is his wife, Edna Lillian Lawrence and his brothers Bill Lawrence and Ernie Lawrence and sisters Jean Skinner, Ferne Skinner and Marion Payne. Louis is survived by his twin brother Lloyd Lawrence of Toronto, Ont., brother Raymond Lawrence of Halifax, NS, twin sisters Grace Skinner of Fredericton, NB and Greta Fequa of Plattsburgh, NY., daughters Pearl Lawrence and her husband James Smart of Surrey, BC, Patricia Blaine of New Westminster, BC, Loretta Krugel and her husband Trevor of Maple Ridge, BC, and son Lloyd Lawrence of Pitt Meadows, BC, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. As a young man in the 1940's Louis and his brother Lloyd began careers as boxers in a Fredericton boxing club which was started by an RCMP officer in the area and often sparring against one another and fighting against each other in bouts in Moncton and Fredericton. Louis left Fredericton and settled in Vancouver where he continued boxing as amateur. His amateur boxing career is highlighted with winning the Golden Gloves Competition in the Vancouver area as a middleweight and reaching the finals of the Pacific Golden Gloves. In 1950 Louis entered the boxing ring as a professional and over the next five years he fought 25 times, losing only four matches. Fifteen of his wins came by knockout. In 1955 Louis won the Canadian middleweight title in York Arena and held the crown for three years until he relinquished the title in 1958. Louis was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1988 in Hamilton, Ontario and the Fredericton Wall of Fame in 2002. Louis was employed by Canadian Pacific Railway/ Via Rail and retired after 38 years of service. The family thanks the staff and friends at Fleetwood Villa for their compassion during Louis's illness and the nursing staff at Laurel Place Hospice for their superb care and kindness. Louis is now in the hands of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Memorial services are being held on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 2:00 pm at First Memorial Funeral Services; Fraser Heights Chapel located at 14835 Fraser Highway, Surrey, BC.
