Clara Alice Jones passed away in Surrey, BC on Thursday April 14 after a short illness. A lifelong Christian, Clara had a faith which sustained her through difficult times. We are very grateful for all the prayers that were made on her behalf.
Clara was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her father, Lewis Walker, was a teacher and her mother, Elizabeth McMunn Walker, a homemaker. Clara was a natural athlete. She was the regional long jump champion in girls’ track in high school, and skated in an ice carnival for two years. Ice skating was enough of a passion that she had to decide between ice skating or college. Clara chose college, and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Home Economics. After a summer-long course for teacher certification, she had her first teaching position in Dryden, Ontario, teaching Home Economics and Physical Education. She kept and used her college textbook cookbook for the rest of her life, and attended reunions of her graduating class regularly.
As a widow with four children, Clara created a blended family when she married widower Gil Jones with his one child. She was a kind and gracious person, welcoming and helpful. She had at least four volunteer activities going on at any one time, such as: swim assistant for a disabled person; reading and recording textbooks for sight impaired students; phoning people to remind them of appointments; teaching bridge. She and Dad loved to travel, visiting Los Cabos in Mexico for many Octobers, and inviting friends and family to join them there. They taught bridge and played tennis together for many years. Clara kept in contact with friends for life, writing, emailing and visiting. Many of them were friends from childhood or college.
Clara is survived by her children, Linda, Peter, Kelly, Wayne, and Carol; grandchildren Jessica, Dylan, Nicole, and Gabriel; great grandchildren Leo, Miles, Ryan and Bella; nieces Raili and Patty; nephews Joel, Gordon, and David; sister-in-law Judy; and numerous cousins.
