Bethany Yin-Mai Poon was born in Calgary on September 12, 2003. Bethany was a beloved daughter, sister, god-daughter, grand daughter, niece, cousin and member of North Richmond Alliance Church where she was baptized on October 2, 2016 by her father Rev. John Poon. She participated in the SHAD summer program at the University of Saskatchewan in 2019 and completed the IB Diploma Programme graduating from Semiahmoo Secondary School during COVID in June 2020. Bethany was also an active member of the 1867 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in North Delta achieving the rank of Master Warrant Officer while receiving several awards during her time of service. Though she began her studies in cell biology at the University of Alberta in the Fall of 2020, Bethany was also a trained histologist and co-author of published research who enjoyed working at the Jack Bell Research Centre, Ike Barber Transplant Lab (VGH Research Pavilion), Lavoie Lab (BC Children's Hospital Research Institute), Acker Lab (University of Alberta/Canadian Blood Services) and PanTHERA Cryosolutions.
Bethany loved her family, friends, colleagues, food, piano, music, singing, brain teasers, reading, research, caring for others, cuddling babies, snuggling with her puppy Peanut, and being in the presence of her God. She passed away peacefully in South Surrey, BC on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Bethany is survived by her mother (Carolyn), father (John), and younger brothers (Joshua, Josiah, and Jacob).
