He graduated from Palma High School in 1965 shortly after becoming an Eagle Scout. He spent a summer working as a Park Ranger in Lassen Volcanic National Park before following in his father's footstep and enlisting in the US Navy. He served for over 21 years and earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer in 1990 in Groton, CT.
He enjoyed Boy Scouts, Amateur Radio, and provided communication for the Sea Otter Classic for 13 years in the backcountry of Fort Ord, CA. He also liked to work on his Lionel train table, was a leader of several youth groups, was Assistant Director of Harbor Home Christian Servicemen's Center, taught Small Groups and Bible Studies, was involved in the Desert Chief's Mess, training new Chief Selectees, was a Chaplain of the Marine Corps League of Surprise, AZ, and was a Deacon at Grace Community Church, in Surprise, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bland William Spencer, and mother, Margaret Sarah (Baitson) Spencer. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Lee (Wade) Spencer, oldest son, Stephen Joel Spencer, daughter-in-law, Sam Spencer, youngest son, David James Spencer, daughter-in-law, Renee (Robbins) Spencer, and two grandsons, Hudson David Spencer, and Harrison Zane Spencer, and many other family members who loved him immensely.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Grace Community Church, 16165 W Mountain View Blvd. Surprise, AZ 85374 on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 11:00 AM.
Interment will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 2929 E Pinnacle Peak Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85024 on Monday, December 23, 2024, 11:00 AM. Military honors will be rendered.
