Carl was born June 18, 1942, in Aberdeen to Clifton C. and Eileen F. (Gutz) Anderson. He was a member of the Aberdeen Central High School class of 1960 and the University of South Dakota class of 1964. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966 in Hanau, Germany.
He met his wife, Barbara Anderson, in the third grade. She became his high school sweetheart, and they were married on December 28, 1963. After returning from Germany, they remained in Aberdeen and raised their three children. They recently celebrated 54 years of marriage. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and faithfully served it as church council president, choir member, and community meal cook, among other roles.
Carl began his career as an insurance agent for Anderson Agency, Inc., founded by his father. In 2010 the agency merged with Rhodes Insurance to become Rhodes Anderson Insurance. His insurance career spanned 45 years. He was a past Agent of the Year and Board President of the Independent Insurance Agents of South Dakota. He was the Executive Director of the South Dakota Grain and Feed Association for many years. Until recently, he served on the South Dakota Railroad Board. He was also a Rotarian.
Carl had many interests outside of his career: aviation, music, photography, traveling, cooking, and woodworking. He leaves behind many beautiful pieces of furniture and other handmade items for his family and friends to cherish. He used his talents to serve Habitat for Humanity. Time with family and friends gave him the most joy through the very end of his life. He will be most remembered for his warmth, humor, and his love as a husband, parent and grandparent.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Carl is survived by his wife, his daughters Sara (Kevin) Ousdigian of Shoreview, MN, Amy (John Brost) Anderson of Edina, MN, and son Robert (Diana Flotten) Anderson of Shoreview, MN; grandchildren Mark, Kathryn, and Linnea Ousdigian, Carl and Sigrid Brost, and Nadia and Charles Anderson; sisters Louise (Tom) Claflin of LaCrosse, WI, and Alice (Dennis) Disbrow of Aberdeen, brother-in-law Bruce (Gina) Anderson of Hooker, OK, and sister-in-law Sandra (Kent) Carmichael of Manhattan, KS, and many nieces and nephews.
