He leaves behind one daughter and son-in-law, Gweneth and Walter Phifer of Mesa, Arizona; one granddaughter, Krista and her husband, Martin Anderton of Chester, Cheshire, England; one great-grandson, Zachary Anderton also of Chester, Cheshire, England; one sister, Danette Tillberg of Salina, Kansas; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Earlene and Rev. John Bagley of Peoria, Illinois; three step-grandchildren: Don Phifer of Chandler, Arizona, Braun Phifer and Cozette Phifer both of Phoenix, Arizona ; long-time friend, Donna Corriveau; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Gwendolyn; his brothers Bill Bagley of Irving, Texas, Jim Bagley of Salina, Kansas; and his sisters Dorothy Richter of Salina, Kansas, Elizabeth Nellie Rindahl of Salina, Kansas, and Patricia Block of Newton, Kansas.
Virgil was born in Salina, Kansas on July 20, 1925. He served his country proudly for three years during WWII as aviation ordnance on the battleship U.S.S. Bataan and as shore patrol on the island of Maui, Hawaii. When he returned home from military service, he married his childhood sweetheart, and served for eight years on the Salina Police Department. He then started his own construction company, Bagley Builders, which he ran for over 40 years doing remodeling, rebuilding, and custom home construction in and around the Salina area. In 1983, he and his wife, Gwen, moved to Chandler, Arizona. He remained in Arizona until the time of his death - living in Chandler, Prescott, Sun City West, and Mesa.
Virgil was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Salina Masonic Lodge, a member and past Captain of the Isis Shrine, and member of Salina VFW and IOOF.
He was an active member of The First Covenant Church in Salina, Kansas and Bethany Community Church in Tempe, Arizona where he served as head usher at each.
He will be remembered as a kind, caring, man and a dedicated servant of God who loved people and touched many lives. He will truly be missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Sunland Mortuary, 15826 Del Webb Blvd in Sun City, Arizona. Burial will follow at Sunland Memorial Park.
