Tyrone David Perkins, Sr., known fondly as “Ty,” “Perk,” “Pop-Pop,” “Bro-man,” “Honey,” “Pop,” and “Daddy,” lived a life of dedication, strength, and compassion. Born on December 4, 1953, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was the only son among five children raised by Eleanor Perkins, who instilled in him values of resilience and love. His mother Eleanor instilled in him a strong value of being a God Fearing Man. A proud graduate of Overbrook High School, Tyrone aspired to a career in Electrical Engineering. He found his calling with the Federal Government at the Veterans Administration (VA), beginning in 1975. Tyrone’s 35-year career was marked by commitment, hard work, and a fierce advocacy for workers’ rights. Starting as an IT Specialist, Tyrone quickly became involved in the VA Federal Union (AFGA). He rose from shop steward to Vice President and ultimately served as Union President for a decade, passionately championing employee rights and fostering a culture of empowerment and respect. Tyrone’s unwavering support for his colleagues earned him multiple awards and accolades, reflecting his commitment to making the workplace fairer and kinder. Outside of work, Tyrone’s generous spirit extended to everyone he knew. Known for his kindness and warm smile, he had a way of brightening any room and bringing joy to others.
Tyrone’s journey into the world of music began in 1974, and from that moment, his passion for DJing was nothing short of infectious. Alongside his long-time friend and partner, Chris Boykin, Tyrone helped to create Super Sounds, a beloved DJ business that became a staple in the Delaware Valley area. Their creativity, energy, and ability to blend beats transformed ordinary events into unforgettable experiences.
As the years went by, Tyrone and Chris each took their own path, and Tyrone went on to establish Digital DJ Entertainment, continuing to make his mark on the community he loved so much. Known throughout the Delaware Valley, Tyrone was always ready to share his gift with others, often surrounded by a team of fellow music lovers—Rashaan (Rich), Kenny, James, Tony, and others—who would join him whenever he needed assistance. Together, they shared a passion for mobile DJing that brought joy to countless people.
Tyrone and Chris, in the early days of their career, even built their own five-foot speakers by hand, setting them apart as pioneers in the DJ world. They were among the first to embrace digital music libraries, forever changing the landscape of DJing. Tyrone’s ability to turn any event into a lively celebration was more than just a talent—it was a reflection of his deep love for his community and his natural ability to bring happiness to those around him.
The joy Tyrone found in seeing people dance, laugh, and have fun fueled his journey as a mobile DJ. It wasn’t just about the music; it was about creating moments of pure joy that lingered long after the music stopped. Even as he faced challenges in his later years, Tyrone’s love for music never wavered. The sound of a great tune was always enough to bring a sense of calm and peace, reminding us all of the deep connection music had with his soul.
Tyrone’s legacy, through both his music and his infectious energy, will forever be cherished by all who knew him. He lived his life as a celebration of sound, friendship, and community, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched.
On April 2, 1977, Tyrone married his beloved wife, Teresa Annette Howard. Together, they shared a beautiful family, raising Tracey Johnson and David Frazier, Tyshea Perkins and Tyrone D. Perkins, Jr. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life, and he relished every moment spent with them. Tyrone’s family was his world, and he would often spend hours reminiscing, looking at photos on his iPad, reliving precious memories. Tyrone was also a man of faith, holding a deep and abiding commitment to God. Baptized as a child, he chose to be baptized again as an adult, reaffirming his faith. Though not an official member of Faith Christian Center, he attended regularly, drawing strength from the pastor’s teachings and the spirit of the choir. Tyrone found peace in his spirituality and loved engaging in discussions on faith and politics, always bringing a thoughtful perspective to the table.
