Lowell Bassett passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 91 on July 22, 2024, surrounded by family. Lowell was born on January 15, 1933 in Anderson, Indiana. After graduating from Pasadena College (now Point Loma Nazarene University) in Southern California, he served in the US Army from 1955-1957. He enjoyed playing basketball for his college, where he and his team are listed in the university's Athletic Hall of Fame, and on the US Army team.
Lowell had four children with his first wife, Evelyn Bassett Gillespie. He taught elementary school students for 35 years and combined that with a love of music. Lowell directed church choirs, sang the national anthem at Laker, Dodger, and Kings games over a period of 38 years, and played multiple instruments (guitar, trumpet, saxophone, and clarinet.) Following his retirement from teaching, he used his love for music and love for God while touring the country for thirteen years, singing in churches with his wife, Deanne. Deanne and Lowell were happily married for 36 years.
After settling down in Sun City in 2011, Lowell became an active member of the Sun City Church of the Nazarene, where he continued to minister in music right up to the week before he died. Lowell is survived by wife Deanne, one brother, three surviving children, and five stepdaughters. Together, Lowell and Deanne have 27 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren, and they send birthday cards to them all!
