Harold was born in Croft, Kansas to Alfred and Mary Howell. He grew up with 9 other siblings. As a teen, he loved spending his time working on the farm and participating in church and sports and drama activities. As he got older, he attended Fort Hayes University in Kansas then on to University of Michigan, Ann Arbor to receive his Master’s in Biology. This sparked his passion for Teaching. His first move was to Ray, Arizona teaching in a Jr. High School. He moved to Phoenix in 1964 where he started his 30+ year career with the Phoenix Union High School system. Teaching at West High School and Carl Hayden High.
In his college years, he met Joann Martin. They married in December of 1955. He enlisted in the United Stated Army and was stationed at Fort Sheridan prior to his overseas tour in Germany. Within a few years, they had started a family, which included Kevin, Karen, Jo Debra and Sarah. As a family they loved to camp, fish, play board games or be involved in the Boy and Girl Scout Clubs.
Being a kind and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Harold and he certainly did not disappoint when it came to wholeheartedly loving his family. He became involved with the Boy Scouts of America as Scout Master to troop 568, was in the Adult Leadership Training Program then became District Commissioner for the NW district.
In his retirement years, he worked and ushered at the Herberger Theater. Was active in the Walk-A-Bout walking group, which took him to many trails and out of state travels. He loved gardening, painting and spending time with family and friends.
Harold is survived by his siblings: Ron, Mary, Bill, Sue, Kay and Larry. His children: Kevin Howell (Rebecca), Karen Bellows (Steve), Jo Debra Howell and Sarah Howell (Mark) and . He was blessed with 2 granddaughters Kim Lednum (Jason) and Jennifer Timpanaro (Joe). Great Grandchildren Kylee, Makenna, Seth, Reed, Brynlee and Cade. He was preceded in passing by his parents Alfred and Mary Howell, his wife Joann, his sisters Monita Westerman, Betty Kenworthy, and his brother Tom Howell.
A Memorial/Birthday celebration will be held at Palm Valley Community Center, in the Ocotillo Room, 14145 W. Palm Valley Blvd., Goodyear, AZ 85395 on Saturday, March 12th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
