He was born on April 15, 1926 in Orr, Oklahoma to Lula Mae Walker and Alvin Horace Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Don Roberts. He proudly served in the United States Army in Germany during World War 2. Al and his family moved to California in 1943. He owned and operated A.W. Roberts Construction, Inc and A.W. Roberts Construction Materials in Salinas, California for over 38 years. He served several terms as president of the Engineering Contractors Association. He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodge.
Upon retirement in 1991, he and his wife Bessie moved to Sun City West, Arizona where they enjoyed the year round sunshine. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing, traveling, and especially spending time with his family and friends.
Al was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. He was a member of the Alvin Drive Church of Christ in Salinas, California. He and his wife Bessie were founding and active members of the Surprise Church of Christ.
He is survived by: his beloved wife of 39 years Bessie Roberts, his sister Darline Pennington, his four children - daughters Patrycya Ely, Shannon Roberts-Musch (Jim), Cynthia Thropp (Hank), and his son Alvin W. Roberts, Jr, He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The memory of his easy smile, loving heart, and quick wit will live on in our hearts until we meet again. Dad was always saying, “Keep on keeping on”, and that’s what we’ll try to do until we are reunited in heaven. We send all our love and admiration for a life well lived.
Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday August 25, 2011 at the Sunland Memorial Park – 15826 Del Webb Blvd. Sun City, Arizona 85351. Viewing will be held Wednesday August 24, 2011 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM.
