He was a native and resident of Sulphur and was a member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church. Dick played football for Sulphur High School and played on three Louisiana State championship teams and earned All State Honors as a fullback. He was a 1951 graduate of LSU. Dick was a Lieutenant Navigator for the Strategic Air Command in the Korean War, navigating KC87 Supertankers. He worked engineering in Trinidad, the Philipines, and the Gulf Coast in the oilfield.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Ben Pruitt of Sulphur, and John William "Bill" Pruitt and wife, Norma of Lake Charles; one daughter, Sandra Lewis and husband, Alvin of Sulphur; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Norma Beatrice Pruitt; a daughter, Susan Pruitt; his parents, Lawrence Wesley Pruitt and Melva Oden Pruitt; and a sister, Martha Lee Riner.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, in Henning Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Doug Cain will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and 4-8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday in the church. The family would like to thank the doctors at Our Lady of Lourdes, Christus St. Patrick, and Lake Charles Memorial Hospitals for their outstanding care.
