He was a native of Rayne and had been a resident of Sulphur for over 45 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Elton enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family, but he had a passion for Cajun cooking. He was a friend to anyone he met and there are very few people who didn't have a chance to experience his wonderful gumbo and bar-b-que.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Ann Meche; his children, Elton "Joe" Meche Jr, David Meche and wife, Donna, Mark Meche, Kenneth Meche, and Carol Albarado, all of Sulphur, Betty Sartin of Bell City, and Donna Gore and husband, Richard of Cataula, Georgia; three sisters, Mary "Trixie" Anderson of Rayne, Aline Prejean of Crowley, and Evelyn Aucoin of Rayne; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Meche; parents, Dave and Effie Meche and brother, Roy Meche
A Celeration of Elton's Life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 23, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Jody Barrilleaux will officiate. Burial will be in Arceneaux Cemetery in Rayne.
