Shirley Louis Phelps Laird, age 96, passed away peacefully in her Sugar Land home on Tuesday, the 12th day of June 2018. She was born on the 15th of November 1921, on the Phelps family farm in Moccasin Gap, Holston, Virginia, to Thomas Rupert Phelps and Kate Alice Boger.
Shirley is preceded in death by her father and mother, Thomas and Kate Phelps; Sisters Thelma Ruth Phelps, Vivian Mae Jones, Jane Alta Flannagan and Ella Beatrice Pendleton; and Brothers Orbin Sanford Phelps and Wade Hampton Phelps who died at birth. She is survived by one son, Thomas Lee “Tommy” Laird and wife Lynell; one daughter, Karen Virginia Laird and husband Tom Boone; grandchildren Amber Callahan, Dana Laird, Corey Callahan, Melody Laird and husband Matt Golliday, Paul Laird and wife Kerry; great grandsons Jaxson Wheeler, Caleb Kugler, Gage Fleming, Nolan Wheeler, Landon Wheeler and Tristan Callahan-Kitagawa. Shirley enjoyed hearing about step-great granddaughters Morgan and Abby Miller, Grace and Ava Townsend. She looked forward to the weekly Friday visits with step-great granddaughter Olivia Beasley who lovingly knew her as Great Granny.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, June 30th at 12:00 noon at Faith Lutheran Church, 800 Brooks Street, Sugar Land, Texas, with a gathering of family and friends following the service. In lieu of the usual rememberances, donations can be made in Shirley’s name to the Fort Bend County Library System, Calvary Episcopal Church in Richmond, TX or Faith Lutheran Church in Sugar Land, TX.
