Lori Lynn Armstrong Marlatt was born in Bryan, Texas, on the 24th of February 1966, to Bobby Michael and Linda Faye Armstrong. She attended Bryan High School and was a member of the class of 1984, although she graduated ahead of schedule in December of 1983.
Lori enrolled as a business major at Texas A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor of Business Administration while double majoring in Finance and Management. Upon graduation, she attended the University of Houston Bates College of Law where she was a member of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society.
After graduation from law school, Lori accepted a position as an Associate Attorney at Jackson Walker in Houston, where she developed an expertise in oil and gas law. Although she initially hoped to become an environmental attorney, Lori soon fell in love with the practice of oil and gas law and formed lifelong friendships with many of her colleagues from Jackson Walker and from the oil and gas industry. She eventually left the downtown law firm and moved to an in-house counsel position with Apache Corporation, and then joined the legal department of Burlington Resources. While working at Burlington Resources, Lori’s daughter Anna was born. Two years later, her son Jacob was born. Lori then left the practice of law temporarily and moved from Houston to Sugar Land to raise her family.
Lori adored her children and jumped whole-heartedly into her new role as a mom. She volunteered as a room mom while her children were in elementary school, read to their classes, planned massive childhood birthday parties, and attended countless swim meets, musicals, and baseball tournaments. She loved every minute of watching her children grow and thrive, and she rarely missed an event. More than one person heard her say over the years that she may have been a good attorney but her true calling was being a mother to Anna and Jacob.
Lori started practicing law again when her children were in elementary school. She crafted a life for herself doing contract legal work that allowed her to work from home for one of her former Jackson Walker colleagues. Even though she was a divorced working mother, Lori’s primary concern was that her children still have the lifestyle she wanted them to have with a stay-at-home mother. Lori started working from home years ago before it was popular and she never looked back, eventually forming a small oil and gas boutique law firm known as Marlatt, Barnwell & Boyd.
Lori’s friends and family knew her as a person who loved cooking, travelling, and being outdoors. Her children have traipsed through a rainforest and hand-fed giant lizards in Puerto Rico with her, sailed through icebergs on an Alaskan cruise with her, hiked various mountains in Colorado and Arizona with her, and travelled all across the United States to various cities in their quest to see all of the MLB stadiums. Lori was fortunate to have her mother, Linda Stipanovic, frequently join in the summer travel plans with Anna and Jacob.
Lori is preceded in death by her father, Bobby Michael Armstrong. She is survived by her husband, Kevin Stephen Therault, her mother and stepfather, Linda Faye and Robert Douglas Stipanovic, her daughter, Anna Caroline Marlatt, and her son, Jacob Douglas Marlatt. Lori is also survived by her sister, Bobbi Michele Franco, and Bobbi’s children and grandchildren, and by her sister Kate Eileen Battinelli and husband Joe Battinelli and their three children.
A celebratory life service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 10th at 10:00 AM at Christ Church Sugar Land, 3300 Austin Parkway, Sugar Land, TX. Services will be officiated by Rev. Michelle Hall. A private family inurnment of ashes will be held at a later date.
