It is with great heartache that we announce the peaceful transition of George Walter Rockwell, from the arms of his beloved family into the arms of his Heavenly Father.
George Walter Rockwell, aged 81, passed away on November 29, 2024 (on his mother’s birthday and his parent's anniversary) at his home after a six-month battle with lung cancer. He was born on August 14, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas to Mary Kathryn Brasher Rockwell and Jacob Harris Rockwell.
Walter attended Abilene High School where he excelled in academics and baseball. He continued his love of the sport into his college years where he attended Abilene Christian College (University) playing baseball for three years beside Gary McCaleb. It was in his freshman year that he developed close friendships with Stanton Calvert, Jerry Pipes, and Gary McCaleb. These four men would later be in each other’s weddings creating a life-long bond of “Forever Friends.” He was a member and president of the Galaxy Social Club. In his junior year, he met the love of his life and soulmate of almost 60 years, Vicki Beeman. They married in January of 1965, and he graduated the same year with a Bachelor of Arts in English. In the fall, he entered the University of Texas Law School and went on to graduate with a Dr. of Jurisprudence in 1968. He and Vicki moved to Houston, Texas following his graduation where he practiced corporate law for 56 years.
‘Rocky’ was a quiet, kind and gentle man, full of wisdom and love who devoted his life in service to Jesus Christ, His Lord and Savior. His dedication to Christ was evident by example while raising his family, helping others in his life work as a lawyer and mentor, his philanthropic efforts in his community and his cherished friendships. He never met a stranger, and if you were blessed to know him, you were most likely inspired and motivated to grow in your faith and as a person.
He loved the outdoors, the Lonesome Oak Ranch and bird hunting with family, ranch partners and friends. He loved a good cup of coffee, coconut meringue pie, coaching baseball with friends, Deacon Lewis and Johnny Cook, and golfing with his sons and close friend, Randy Zeller. He loved the Rocky Mountains, fishing streams, and flyfishing with family and his ranch partners, Dave Moulton and John Carson. He loved teaching adult Bible classes for 25 plus years, especially the letters of the Apostle Paul and specifically the book of Romans. Rocky was a fabulous cook who enjoyed making his famous ‘Papa’s Spaghetti’, grilled steaks, oven-roasted potatoes and his very special shrimp gumbo. He loved card games and being surrounded often by his precious family.
His dignity, his integrity, his wisdom, his values and his deep love for Jesus will resonate and live on as his legacy through his children and grandchildren and those he influenced.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dr. Rochelle Owens; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Lynn and Jack Shupe.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Vicki; his three children, Brian Beeman Rockwell and Kirsten, Leanne Kathryn Taylor, and Keith Wilson Rockwell and Allison; his grandchildren, Eden Rayne Rockwell, Sarah Elizabeth Taylor, and James William Rockwell; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Becky and Jim Killingsworth, nieces, nephews, cousins and many precious friends.
Rocky said, “Heaven is where Jesus is, and I know where I am going. I have a reservation!” We take the greatest comfort in knowing we will be reunited with him again one day when our ‘rooms’ are ready.
The Rockwell Family would like to thank Daniel Ezekiel, Patricia Basquez, Ariel Watson, Cornerstone Caregiving and Houston Hospice for going above and beyond in their service as they comforted, loved and cared for our Papa.
To our many friends who called, texted, or wrote to show your support, we thank you. For all the prayers, visits and offers of assistance, the past six months, now, and in the future, you have our deepest gratitude. Through your thoughts and prayers, we have indeed felt God’s love surrounding us during our greatest time of need. Words cannot express how much your caring and concern have lifted us during this difficult time. We will always remember the comfort and love you showed to each of us.
Sincerely,
The Rockwell and Taylor Families
In lieu of flowers, the family would be greatly blessed by donations to Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.org), The Bible Project (bibleproject.com), or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
