Billy joined the Army National Guard at the age of 17 in North Carolina. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Texas in January 1957 where he met his wife Adela Torres. They married January 3rd, 1960. They had three children.
He continued with the Army National Guard earning expert status for marksmanship. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant in February 1964.
Billy worked in the grocery business in management and sales for almost 30 years before leaving in 1985 to join his wife in the family floral business.
Billy was involved with the Lions Club for many years, serving as president during his membership.
Billy and his wife retired to Flynn, Texas in 1999 and he served as lector and usher at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church in Hilltop Lakes. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, and music. He was a self-taught guitarist and pianist, entertaining at various events and nursing facilities.
He is preceded in death by his parents Solon and Beadie Pendergrass, brother George Abbott, sisters Shirley Pendergrass, Ruby Harris, and Mildred Berryman.
He is survived by his wife, Adela Pendergrass; son Mark Pendergrass and daughter-in-law Debi Pendergrass; daughter Julie Lyon and son-in-law Gaston Lyon; daughter Shannon Janes and son-in-law Steve Janes; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; and sister, Paulette Arrington.
