A loving husband, father and grandfather. To you his family and friends he was Jerry; however, his legal name was Alton Lionel Warren. He was born in Houston February 7, 1935, and died September 21, 2024. His parents were Inez and John Davis Warren. His father died when he was four years old. His mother raised Jerry and his two siblings by opening a men’s boarding house in Houston during World War II. She was a great cook, and the boarding house was a success.
Jerry graduated from Austin High School in Houston and then enrolled at Texas A & M where he received his Bachelor’s degree in geophysics in 1957. He was commission into the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. His first assignment was to study meteorology at Texas A & M.
After completing his studies, he was assigned to the Weather Office Station at Sewert Air Force Base in Smyrna, Tennessee. Before transferring to Tennessee, he married Carolyn Faulkner, a graduate of The University of Texas. It was definitely a mixed marriage. When his Air Force duty was complete, the couple moved back to Texas, and he began a long and successful career as a geophysicist.
He worked for Geophysical Services Inc., Texas Instruments, Geosource Geophysical, G/H Industries, and Fairfield Industries before starting his own company, Reservoir Geophysical Inc. in Sugar Land. His work carried him to Alaska, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Russia, China and all parts of the United States.
He was a life member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Along the way he received his Master’s degree from the University of Houston in physics. He became an avid UH supporter with season tickets to both football and basketball and endowed several scholarships to the University of Houston.
He was a quite and gracious man who showed kindness to everyone he met. He bragged about his children’s success and loved spending time with his grandchildren talking to them about the world and his adventures, but mainly focusing on their futures and how proud he was of the young women they were becoming.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 66 years Carolyn F. Warren; daughter Deirdre Warren; son Mark Warren and his wife Dyvette Warren and their children, Allyse & Julia Warren.
Jerry, Carolyn, and their children, Deirdre and Mark, traveled the world and made homes wherever they landed. It was a life they all enjoyed!
In lieu of flowers you might consider making a donation to a scholarship in his name at the University of Houston or donate to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service for Alton will be held Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1805 W Alabama St., Houston, Texas 77098 with a reception to follow.
