It is with great sadness that we announce that John (Sean) P. Power of Airmont, NY passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. He was 86 years old and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.
Sean was born on June 26, 1937 to the late Thomas and Ann (Maher) Power in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, Ireland. In 1957 at the age of 20, he emigrated to NY. He served in the U.S. army for two years from 1961 to 1963 and was stationed in Korea. Prior to being drafted he met his future wife, Jean Lichtenberg at the City Center ballroom in Manhattan and they began dating.
He married Jean T. Lichtenberg on October 3, 1964. They resided in Brooklyn, NY and then Valley Stream before moving to Airmont, NY with their two children, Nancy and Sean in 1971. Their son Kevin who was born in April 1972 died in infancy.
Sean worked several jobs when he came to the United States before starting work as a messenger/runner for an international brokerage firm called Carl Marks and Co in the financial district. He worked his way up the company ladder and eventually was named an assistant vice president. He left the company in 1987 as it was acquired by a foreign entity. Not ready to retire, Sean reinvented himself, first starting his own company pressure washing restaurant kitchens and then moved on to car sales at Mt.Kisco Chevrolet and finally on to Thomasville Furniture where he was honored for many years as one of their top salesmen. Sean retired at the age of 78.
Sean was a great athlete who played hurling back in Ireland and in the United States. He was an avid swimmer and swam several times a week up until August of 2023. Sports came naturally to him and he quickly learned to play basketball, baseball and golf which he enjoyed with his children and grandchildren. He even started skiing when he was in his 40s and went on several ski trips with his children and sisters and brothers -in -law. Sean was a great husband and an active father who was a constant source of help and support to his children. Family was everything to him and he loved being a grandfather. He attended school plays, pageants, sports games and Halloweens and took his grandchildren out for breakfast often.
Sean is survived by his beloved wife, Jean T. Power; loving children, Nancy Power and her husband, John Smyth, Sean T. Power and his wife Paige; cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Cayleigh, Niamh, Kevin and Liam. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive him. His son Kevin Martin Power predeceased him in 1972 and he is also predeceased by his 10 siblings. He will be greatly missed and forever loved.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 13 2023 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the Wanamaker and Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Rt.59, Suffern, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:15am on Thursday, December 14, at the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.
