Dorothy “Dot” Schmidt (affectionately known to many as Granny) of Tuxedo, NY passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024. She was 96. Dot was born in Narrowsburg, NY to Martin and Clara Lillie. She graduated from Narrowsburg High School and Delhi College then moved to Eagle Valley in 1949 when she married Don Schmidt. She was an active volunteer and a member of many organizations. Her faith was very important to her. Dot was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Chapel, Tuxedo, NY where you could find her teaching Sunday School, serving as a trustee, helping with the Children’s Christmas pageants, Easter Egg Hunts, plant & flower sales, yard sales, Sunday School picnics and Roast Beef Dinners. She was a past treasurer and trip coordinator for the Tuxedo Silver Dollars, a member of Sloatsburg Senior Citizens, charter member and past president of both the Eagle Valley Fire Company Auxiliary and the Suffern American Legion Auxiliary, past Matron of Tuxedo Order of the Eastern Star, as well as a member of Newborns In Need and Sterling Stitchers/SAGA.
Dot had many different careers. As a young girl in Narrowsburg she was a phone operator and server at a local resort. After she moved to Eagle Valley she became a phone operator for Tuxedo while helping with the Schmidt’s poultry farm. She also taught preschool for many years at the Ringwood Preschool and Tuxedo Library in addition to managing the Tuxedo summer camp in Eagle Valley. Dot loved all her students as her own. She left teaching and became a teller at Marine Midland/HSBC Bank in Sloatsburg for several years until she retired.
Anyone who knew Dot, knew that she would always make you smile and would be there to help in any way she could. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Don Schmidt, sister Clara Kerbs, brothers Albert, Alfred and Arthur and grandson Brian Johnson. She is survived by her sisters, Phyllis Sickman and Priscilla Frost, children, Don (Lynn) Schmidt, Diane (Rip) Brooks and Dorothy (Dave) Johnson. She was Granny to eight grandchildren, Ralph (Shari), Deirdre, Kristine (Anthony), Andrea, Steven, Brian, Matthew and Michael (Shelby) and nine great-grandchildren, Jackson, Jameson, Hannah, Clayton, William, Dylan, Amanda, Ferryn and Russell, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, July 28th from 4-8pm at Wanamaker & Carlough Funeral Home, 177 Route 59, Suffern, NY 10901. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, July 29th at 11am at St. Elizabeth's Chapel, 38 Chapel Turn, Tuxedo Park, NY 10987. Interment to follow at St. Elizabeth Cemetery, 38 Chapel Turn, Tuxedo Park, NY 10987.
