Mrs. Randolph Arnold Aufranc

AUFRANC, Randolph Arnold of Needham, MA., formerly of Wellesley, MA passed away on May 12, 2011 at the age of 102. She was born in Lynchburg, VA and was a graduate of Randolph Macon Woman’s College and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Her graduate work in art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia twice won her awards to study in Europe. She became head of the Art Department at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia and pursued a career primarily in portraiture but also produced many landscapes in oil and watercolor and illustrations in pen and ink. She studied at Harvard on a Carnegie Fellowship. Her works are in many private and public collections.

Wife of the late Dr. Otto E. Aufranc, an orthopedic surgeon known for his innovative techniques and contributions in hip surgery. Mother of Dr. St. George Tucker Aufranc and the late Otto William Randolph Aufranc. Grandmother of Lisa Wescott Sharples, Dr. St. George Tucker Aufranc II and Kaarina Elizabeth Aufranc. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren. Daughter of the late Professor B. W. Arnold and Mary (Jackson) Arnold.

Randolph was a long –standing resident of Wellesley and a member of Pi Beta Pi Sorority, the D.A.R. , the Wellesley Garden Club, and the Wellesley Country Club (where she played golf well into her 80’s). She volunteered at the Massachusetts General Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, Wellesley Community Center and the Wellesley Library.

After moving to North Hill in Needham in her early 90’s she stayed busy writing and illustrating articles for the North Hill News and read at least a book a day. She had a flair for a good story and relished her southern heritage as only a Virginian can.

Services are private. A celebration of her life, open to family and friends, will be held at the Wellesley Country Club, 300 Wellesley Ave., Wellesley Thurs. May 19 at 5 PM.
