He was born on April 18, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Joseph B Gazza and Margaret (Burkey) Gazza. He was a loving husband to Vera (Jurkiewicz) for 57 years. He leaves his children Patricia A. Gazza, Florida; Pauline Gazza-Woody (husband, Eddie), Alabama; Joseph B Gazza (wife, Lysa; children Casey and Kylie), Georgia; Michael J. Gazza, Maine; and Jennifer A. Reis (husband, Adam; children Johanna and Lily), Rhode Island. Survived by his brother, Robert Gazza (wife, Diane) of Long Island, NY. Predeceased sister, Barbara A. Martin, California.
He graduated from New York University, College of Engineering, with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. Pursued graduate studies at Brooklyn Polytech before induction into the U.S. Army.
After completing military service, he joined the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Watertown, MA. as a Research Engineer. While there, he authored or co-authored numerous technical papers on high temperature materials and, in particular, structural ceramics. His work has been cited by U.S. and international researchers in these fields. He also held several patents in this area.
He was a Fellow and Emeritus member of the American Ceramic Society. In Sudbury, he was involved in youth sports, coaching Sudbury Little League baseball, girls softball, Sudbury Town League basketball, and CYO basketball (winning a greater Boston CYO Championship in 1986). He retired from ARL in 1994 and enjoyed travelling in the U.S. and abroad.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, August 27 from 9-10:30am at The Duckett-J.S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, followed by an 11 am Mass at St. Matthias Catholic Church, 409 Hemenway Street, Marlborough, MA. Burial will be private at Bourne National Cemetery.
