Clayton Allen

Clayton Allen, of Sudbury, died at his residence Saturday, October 20, 2012 following a period of declining health. He was 95 and the husband of June (Figley) Allen for 66years. Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, May 19, 1917, he was the son of the late Frederick G. and Ila M. (Bunzey) Allen. He was raised and educated in Binghamton, New York and held an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering. He was employed at IBM until he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps following the attack at Pearl Harbor. Trained as a Navigator, Bombardier and Gunner in a Martin B 26 Marauders flying 50 missions over enemy occupied Europe in WWII. Mr. Allen was highly decorated by the Army Air Force and was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as well as the Air Medal 8 times. He also received the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, the American Defense Service Medal, and the American Campaign Metal. He was twice awarded the Euro-Africa-Mid East Campaign Metal, the World War II Victory and National Defense Service Medals and the Air Force Longevity Service Award no less than 5 times. Beyond WWII Mr. Allen served his country in the Air Force from 1947 to 1963 and was discharged as a Lt. Colonel. Colonel and Mrs. Allen moved to Sudbury in 1960 and he became employed for a time with Sylvania and later with Raytheon for 18 years as a Program Manager, retiring in 1982. Active in his community on various levels. He was named Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1995; the Sudbury Grange Citizen of the Year in 1997; and received the Sudbury Volunteer

Award in 2003.He served as Grand Marshall of both the Memorial Day and Fourth of July Parades. He was an avid photographer and especially enjoyed photographing weddings. He was a late member of the VFW’s Lt. Scott Milley Post # 8771 and the American Legion Post # 191 in Sudbury. In addition to his wife, June, he is survived by his children; Nancy J. Holland and her husband, William, of Mt. Vernon, Maine; Judith A. Robert of Belchertown, MA; Charles L. Allen of Bellingham, MA and David R. Allen and his wife, Catherine, of Gahanna, Ohio. He also leaves his grandchildren; Nathan Holland of Beverly, MA, Jessica Hathaway and her husband, Kevin, of New London, NH; William Allen of Gahanna, Ohio and Dierdre Allen of KY. He was predeceased by his siblings, Richard and Jerry Allen. Funeral Services will be held Sat., Oct. 27 at 11:00 am at the Duckett-J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Rd., Rt. 20, Sudbury, followed by United States Air Force Honors at New Town Cemetery, Sudbury. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Donations in Clay’s memory should be made to and local veterans group.
