Grasshopper or Pawpaw, as he was known to many in the area, was born September 8, 1930 to Quincey and Minnie Lowery and attended Wilson High School. He married his true love and lifelong partner Hannah and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the beginning of the Korean War. Lewis spent years in service, including in the reserves while he and Hannah raised their family. Lewis and Hannah would write notes on the back on his services pictures as mementos remind them both of how they missed each other and detailing the antics of his fellow soldiers, the scenery in the area, and at times, a very edited description of the action he encountered. The U.S. Army recognized Lewis for his honorable service with medals that still lay dormant upon his uniform even today. Lewis was a member of the VFW in Stuarts Draft. He loved to work. He held several jobs for many years and retired from both Compton and the City of Staunton.
