HOBE SOUND – William “Bill” Halsey Wood III passed away peacefully on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Hobe Sound, FL, at the age of 93, surrounded by his family and caretaker, Mr. Alphanso Lewis. Born on Long Island, NY, to William Halsey Wood Jr. and Elvira S. Wood, Bill spent his early years on Long Island before attending Kent School and the University of Virginia. Following his education, he served in the Army for two years in Germany, which piqued his interest in traveling.
Upon returning to the United States, Bill joined The Equitable Life Assurance Society. It was shortly thereafter that he met Juliann Brownell in Little Compton, RI, and knew she was the one. In 1970 Bill became the Agency Manager of the Boston Agency, prompting a move to Wayland, MA, where he and Julie raised their two children.
Bill retired in 1990, and he and Julie relocated to Hobe Sound, FL, while spending summers in Little Compton, RI. An avid tennis player and golfer, Bill also cherished traveling, particularly to Europe, where he and Julie formed lasting friendships. He found great joy in entertaining family and friends.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years; his children, William Halsey Wood IV (Dena) of Crane Hill, AL, and Juliann Wood Cunningham (Eddie Scileppi) of Juno Beach, FL; and his four granddaughters, Hannah Buckley (Michael) of Enfield, CT, Kayla Couch and Julia Wood of Lexington, KY, and Emma Wood of Palm Harbor, FL. He also leaves behind one great grandson, Bentley Couch.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Memorial Chapel, Jupiter Island, FL, on Tuesday, November 26, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's memory may be made to Treasure Coast Hospice, Stuart, FL; treasurehealth.org; or the National Audubon Society; act.audubon.org.
