She was born in Escanaba, Michigan on November 14, 1930 to Emil and Tillie Erickson. In 1951 Joyce graduated from the Columbia School of Nursing in Milwaukee. On April 24, 1953 Joyce married Lorin Griffith and they celebrated their 61st anniversary this spring. Together they raised their children, ran a business and in later years traveled around the world.
Joyce was a devoted and loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved completely and had the unique ability to make you feel that you were exactly who she needed to see even in a crowded room. She also had a great sense of style in the clothes she wore, the houses she turned into homes and the beautiful tables set for gatherings of friends and family.
Joyce lived in West Bend, Wisconsin for over 40 years. She was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and served on the West Bend Columns Scholarship Foundation. For the past 15 years she lived in Hobe Sound, Florida. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Lost Lake Women’s Club.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Lorin C. Griffith; children, Judy (Randy) Averill, Scott (Linda) Griffith, Vicki (Shawn) Keegan, Mark (Chris) Griffith and Jeffrey Griffith; nine grandchildren, Brian (Allison), Abby (Bernie), Amanda, Ryan, Clay, Kelsey, Andrew, Madeline and Grace; and four great grandchildren, Leah, Ronan, Rosalind, and Elowen. Joyce is also survived by many nieces and nephews in the extended Erickson/Williamson/Van Effen families.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and a very special niece Barbara Johnson.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held 10:30 AM to 11 AM, Saturday, November 1, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Hobe Sound, Florida with a Memorial Service beginning at 11 AM. A lunch reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Bend, Wisconsin.
