Jane was born on her family’s farm in Qala, Gozo on December 7, 1936. Years later, Jane would meet the love of her life, Gratius Scerri, in her home of Qala. After just three short months, the couple knew that they were destined to spend their lives together and got married on May 30, 1957. The two were married for 43 love-filled years. In February of 1962, Jane emigrated from Malta to New York with their first daughter, Rosemarie. In New York, she and Gratius welcomed their second daughter, Michelle, into the world and raised their family. Jane and Gratius worked tirelessly to provide for their family and put down roots in their new home. Despite an ocean between them, Jane and Gratius stayed connected to Malta and their family there, and would return to the cherished islands for summer visits with their two daughters.
Jane gained her first son-in-law when Giorgio Mizzi married Rosemarie in 1985 and with the birth of their son, Christopher, became a Nanna for the first time in 1993. Shortly after, Jane became a Nanna to two more of her grandchildren: Jessica and Catherine.
In 2003, Jane’s family grew once again when Assaad Gerges married Michelle and with the birth of their daughters, Emily and Janet, she became a Nanna to her final two grandchildren. Family was Jane’s whole world and being a Nanna became her pride and joy. She was dedicated to and endlessly proud of her five grandchildren.
Jane was a devout Catholic, beloved mother and treasured Nanna, who enriched the lives of those around her with delicious meals, countless stories about her childhood in Malta, and the great love story she and Gratius shared. She was always ready to share recipes, gardening tricks, and stock market tips on a moment’s notice. For Jane, cooking for loved ones was her ultimate sign of affection and she took pride in every meal that she crafted. While living in Stony Point with Rosemarie, she even shared her cooking skills with the priests and brothers at the Marian Shrine for years.
The memories with and of her will live on for generations to come through her family. Though she will be greatly missed, they find comfort in knowing she is at peace and reunited with her husband.
Jane is predeceased by her husband Gratius (1926 - 2000) and survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law (Rosemarie and Giorgio, and Michelle and Assaad) and grandchildren (Christopher and his girlfriend, Michaela; Jessica and her fiancé, Alex; Catherine and her husband, Rance; Emily, and Janet), and sister (Carmena Cutajar).
Services will take place on Thursday, September 29th at 10 AM at Michael J. Higgins Funeral home in Stony Point, NY. Following the services, Jane will be laid to rest next to her husband at the Brick Church Cemetery in Spring Valley, NY.
