Robert (Bob) MacQuarrie of Spruce Grove, Alberta, passed away on October 20, 2021. He was
born in Edson, Alberta and moved North with his family in the mid-1960s; fi rst living in Baker
Lake and then Yellowknife. He spent more than 35 years in the Northwest Territories working
as a school teacher, a principal, and as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the NWT.
He was keenly interested in the existential circumstances of human life and how best to live life
effectively and well. Pursuing this interest, he undertook a life-long study of religion, morality
and human rights. With refi ned understanding, he learned to fear neither life nor death. He lived
and eventually died with a richly satisfying peace of mind.
For the benefi t of others who might share similar interests, he has left unpopular but,
nonetheless, honest, valid and productive assessments of religion, morality and human rights.
On another note, although he readily acknowledged he was not a master of either activity, he loved
to sing and dance.
Bob is survived by his loving family including daughter Catherine, and sons Donald, Kenneth, and
Douglas, as well as Karen, Kate, and Kirk, the children of his beloved late spouse, Irene Johnson.
He is also survived by his sister Helen, and predeceased by his fi rst wife, Jo MacQuarrie (née Solway),
and by his siblings Ian, and Mary Flora.
In memory of Bob, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders, Plan International, the
David Suzuki Foundation or any charitable organization which helps those suffering under
conditions which make it diffi cult to cope with life. In respect of Bob’s wishes, there will be no
formal public ceremony to mark his passing, however, remembrances can be made at
