1940-2023
The family of Garry Kulak are deeply saddened to announce his unexpected, but peaceful passing on March 14, 2023, at the age of 82 years.
Garry was born in Edmonton – the eldest child of Jack and Dora Kulak. He grew up in what was known as the Techumseh area, southwest of Stony Plain. He started school there, and later attended Holborn School until the end of Grade 8. He then attended St. Matthew Lutheran School in Stony Plain for about 3 weeks, before realizing that he already knew enough and just wanted to be on the farm helping his mom and dad.
Garry then decided maybe he should try being a carpenter and worked on house construction in Edmonton. After he was done being a carpenter, he went to work at Dominion Bridge riveting culverts. He remained there until December 1962 when he moved his young family to the Kulak family farm. In March 1966, the family moved to Phyllis’s mom and dads farm in the Holborn area, where they remained actively farming until May 2006. After having a farm auction, they moved into Stony Plain, where they resided in their home until December 2019, when they moved into 3 Robins Active Living Community.
Garry was a farmer at heart, he loved caring for his land and animals. He took great pride in achieving a 100% calf crop and having crop lines that were 99.9% perfect. He and Phyllis were active members of the Holborn Community League. Garry was also very involved at St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School.
Garry and Phyllis enjoyed travelling to many destinations with family and friends. Hawaii, Mexico, USA, Dominican Republic, Cuba and 2 visits to Germany were among the places they went. He also enjoyed quadding on his Polaris, wearing his blue helmet with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. Snowmobiling, camping and playing cards were also favorite things he enjoyed.
Garry married Phyllis Litzenberger, whom he met in Grade 4 at Holborn School. They were married July 14, 1961 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Golden Spike. They were blessed with 3 children, Catherine, Colleen and Jeffrey.
Garry is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Phyllis; children – Cathy Campbell (Morgan), Colleen Dac (Randy), Jeff Kulak (Alex). 9 Grandchildren – Jayden (Caleigh), Nolan (Megan), Roxanne (Daniel), Matthew (Shelby), Trent, Natalie (Kevin), Daylon, Wyatt, Dawson; 5 Great grandchildren – Mckenna, Jace, Tucker, Jubilee, Emmett. Sister – Linda Riedlinger (Bill), Brothers – Donald and Raymond (Roselyn), Sister-in-law Jean. Garry was predeceased by his granddaughter Chelsey Rae and brother Delmar.
If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Garry’s memory to Light Up Your Life Society.
A Funeral Service will be held for Garry at 1 pm on Friday, March 24, 2023 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Stony Plain, 5021 – 52 Ave. Burial at St. Matthew Lutheran Cemetery.
The family invites you to join them in a time of fellowship and refreshments at Holborn Hall.
