Thomas Oscar Gillis, 83, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024. Born on October 24, 1940, in El Paso, Texas. Thomas graduated from the University of Texas before pursuing his law degree at Hastings College of Law in San Francisco. He passed the California State Bar in 1967 and proudly began his legal career. After law school, Tom opened a private practice, where he dedicated himself to serving his clients.
He later became a workers' compensation judge, further contributing to the field before returning to private practice until his retirement in 2021. A lover of literature, Tom found great joy in reading and had a special appreciation for poetry. One of his favorite poems was by Kahlil Gibran: “Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.” This line captured his deep understanding of love and connection, reflecting his values throughout his life. During his retirement, Tom enjoyed raising horses, farming walnuts, and spending quality time with his beloved wife, Cecilia. He loved her dearly and cherished the time spent with her. Thomas lived his life fully, embracing every moment and never having any regrets.
He is survived by his two sons, Burke and Grant, as well as his three bonus children, Alma, Iselia, and Nacho. He was a proud grandfather to Aaron, Tyler, Ciara, Nathan, Destiny, Daniel Jr., Cesy, Chogi, Sierra, Val, Noe, Nacho jr., Priscilla, and Yulie. Thomas Oscar Gillis will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his passionate career in law, his love of literature, and the profound connections he shared with all who knew him. His legacy will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who loved him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 10am at St. Luke Catholic Church, 3847 N. Sutter Street, Stockton, CA. Following Mass is a Committal at San Joaquin Catholic Cemetery, 719 E. Harding Way, Stockton, CA.
