A lifelong Stocktonian, Roxene was born on June 3rd, 1941 to Nadine and Leo Calestini, proprietors of Leo’s Bakery on Delaware Avenue (next to Gaines Market on Alpine). Roxene spent much of her youth in her parents’ bakery, honing skills that would serve her later in life. She was a 1958 graduate of Stockton High School, and later moved to Lake Tahoe and became a beautician.
She would soon return to her roots, in more ways than one. Coming home to Stockton to raise her three young children, Roxene found a job at the University of the Pacific serving as cook for several fraternities and sororities. That job became her career; more than just a cook, Roxene found herself as house mother, counselor, confidant, and friend. For 20 years, Roxene fed body, mind and spirit, no doubt leaving an indelible impression on countless university students in the 80’s and 90’s.
It was easy to see why Roxene was so invested in the students she fed, for that dedication began at home with her own three children. Extended family and even friends were also the recipients of Roxene’s generous nature. Always the life of the party, Roxene so loved to entertain that every holiday, birthday, or special occasion was never overlooked. Guests at Roxene’s parties were always met with great food, lovely trappings, and lively conversation.
In her spare time, Roxene loved to read. She was such an avid reader that nothing was out of her purvey; from sappy novels and cookbooks to even a phonebook if it was near her.
Roxene is lovingly survived by her daughter, Susan (Leonard) Allala of Stockton; sons, Todd Stanfield of Sonoma and Robert (Elizabeth) Randall of Stockton; sisters, Jolene (Henry) Munoz of Fremont and Jeanne (Stanley) Nixon of Lodi; grandchildren Ashlee Randall, Lauren Allala, Joshua Randall and Robert Randall and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Steven Calestini.
As was Roxene’s wish, there will be no service. Instead, her family requests remembrances be made to a favorite charity, or in service to others in her memory. We love you, Roxene; you were a force of nature and will be greatly missed.
