Betty was born in Phillips, Wisconsin in 1923 to Joseph and Maria Slaby. Joseph and Maria arrived at Ellis Island in 1905 from Austria, Hungry and moved to Chicago where they met and were married in 1906. After working in Chicago for a few years, the Slabys moved to Phillips in 1915 and worked a farm. Betty was the youngest of six children Mary, Steve, Joseph, Carl and Anna (Sr. Adele). Betty always commented that she grew up "organic" living on the farm. She went to Chicago after the war where she met and married Paul in 1947 and their son Paul (Butch) was born in 1948. Betty was the ultimate housewife of the 50's, staying home to take care of her family. After entering the workforce in the 60's, Betty cooked all day on Sunday to make meals for the week. She spoiled her family with her baking skills and created many memories with her holiday baking of strudel, potica, kolacky and special cookies that she could only make. Her grandchildren were treated to many of her special cakes for their birthdays. Betty lost her husband in the late 90's, but kept herself busy still caring for her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and participating in the SWU and attending Gads Hill. Betty fought cancer three times in her life and still managed to keep a positive attitude. Betty's faith and "okay, what's next" philosophy was inspiring. She took care of herself and her home until she was hospitalized and hated being "taking care of".
