Eugenie S. Baker, died in her sleep during the early morning hours of March 29, 2022 in Charlottesville, Virginia of natural causes, she was 102. Born on September 1, 1919, Jean was at heart a farm girl from rural upstate New York. The years of the Great Depression, with World War II soon to follow, asserted formative impact on Jean. Her life long interest in politics and world events were often the topic of discussion with friends and family. Professionally, Jean excelled as an accomplished interior designer. Her love of beautiful buildings, stylish interiors and gardens featured prominently throughout her life. She worked to breathe new life into apartments and houses in New York City, New York, Montclair, New Jersey, Newport, Rhode Island and Staunton, Virginia through extensive renovation and interior arrangements. Jean served as a constant reminder that thoughtfully designed surroundings contribute profoundly to a peaceful, productive and joyful life. An active member of Alliance Française for many years, Jean’s public outreach also included active support of both the Newport Public Library and the Narragansett Bay Symphony Community Orchestra in Newport, Rhode Island. Gregarious and engaging, Jean loved to entertain, always thoughtfully and generously prepared for the occasion. We will miss her gifts of style, celebration, discernment and straight forward thinking. Jean was proceeded in death by her husband (Lt.) Douglas H. Baker and by her step-greatgrandson, Julian Martinez. Surviving are her three stepsons, Anthony Baker (Amy Arnold), Andrew Baker (Virginia Baker) and Jonathan Baker (Juliet Coombs ) and their children and grandchildren Gabrielle Amster (Adrian Martinez); Abigail Baker (Elizabeth), Anthony Baker (Chelsea Baker) and Annie Baker; Sally Baker, James Baker (Katie Earle, Scarlett), David Baker, Farrah Halliwell and Corin Halliwell.
