She was born November 24, 1931, in Joliet, Illinois, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Paul and Jean Ann Hess Flowers. She had previously resided in Joliet, Wilmette, and Northbrook, IL, Darien, CT, and Hendersonville, NC, prior to relocating to Statesville where she resided with her son for the last few years. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1953 from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker and had been a second-grade teacher in Glencoe and Wilmette, IL, and a preschool teacher in Darien, CT. She volunteered for many years at Four Seasons Hospice as well as Interfaith Assistance Ministry in Hendersonville, and more recently at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. She was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic in Statesville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on September 27, 2012, by her husband, Robert Francis Schopps, whom she married on September 1, 1956; a brother, Joseph Clarence Flowers; and a granddaughter, Jaime Kathleen Schopps.
She is survived by her five children, Michael R. (Julie) Schopps of Statesville, James P. (Jill) Schopps of Denver, CO, Margaret S. (Evan) Wyckoff of Trumbull, CT, Kathleen S. (John) Frey of Acton, MA, and Andrew T. (Kristen) Schopps of Fairfield, CT; ten grandchildren, Katy, Sarah, Ali, Andy, Alex, Emma, Greg, Robby, Grady and Tommy; two sisters, Ann Flowers Howlett of California and Mary Kathleen Batts of Florida; and a brother, William Dougall Flowers of Missouri.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM Saturday, December 20, 2014, at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with Father Thomas J. Kessler officiating.
