Mary Cook Childress Kissam, 95, of 359 Turnersburg Highway, Statesville, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 7, 1915, in Stantonsburg, NC, and was the daughter of William Henry and Mary Catherine Barfield Cook. For many years, she was the pastor’s secretary at First Baptist Church in Statesville and was a member of Diamond Hill Baptist Chruch.
On July 21, 1937, she married Charles F. Childress who preceded her in death at February 7, 1976, and on November 6, 1976, she married Roddy Kissam who preceded her in death on May 30, 1985. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mattie Shingleton, Julia Shingleton, and Dorothy Gay; and two brothers, Marion H. and Willie Cook.
Mary is survived by two daughters, Janelle Edwards of Washington, NC, and Mary Charlene Hinson of Statesville; a son, Terry Childress (Rhonda) of Mooresville; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 6:45 PM on Friday, June 18, 2010, at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
Funeral services celebrating Mary’s life will be held at 7:00 PM Friday in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Holleman officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 PM Saturday at Stantonsburg Cemetery in Stantonsburg, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Diamond Hill Baptist Church, 2320 E. Broad Street, Statesville, NC 28677.
