Bonnie McLelland Harmon, 98, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2024, in Statesville, North Carolina. Known for her radiant spirit, kindness, and dedication to family and friends, Bonnie’s presence left a lasting impact on the communities of Statesville and Brevard, the two places she called home throughout her life.
Born on March 12, 1926, Bonnie was the daughter of Giles T. and Mattie Daniels McLelland. She grew up in the Central Community of Iredell County, where she developed a deep love of family. Bonnie’s marriage to her beloved Frank was a lifelong romance, and all who knew them witnessed their deep affection for one another. They had one son, Giles, who died tragically in service as a North Carolina Highway Patrol Officer in 1985.
Bonnie and Frank moved to Brevard, NC, where they owned and operated the Sunset Motel for many years. They were active members of First United Methodist Church there, and forged friendships that would enrich their lives in the decades to come.
Throughout her life, Bonnie was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. She had a passion for her faith, which she shared generously with those around her. Her warmth, humor, and kindness touched the lives of many who knew her. Her home was often filled with laughter, love, and the welcoming embrace she extended to all.
Bonnie is survived by her beloved sisters-in-law Joann, Evelyn and Jeanne McLelland and a wide circle of extended family and cherished friends. She was preceded in death by Frank and Giles, as well as her brothers Floyd, Clay, Henry, David and Thad McLelland and sisters Nell James, Texie Harmon and Rowena McLelland.
Especially in the last decades of her life, Mrs. Harmon’s nieces Sheila Ammons, who passed away earlier this year, and Joan Lewis and their families played a significant role in her care and support. While she will be missed by all of her nieces and nephews, the role she played in the families of her sister Texie’s children — and the role they played in hers — was a reciprocal gift. Her family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and the countless memories they shared, knowing she lives on in the legacy of love and kindness she leaves behind.
The celebration of Bonnie’s life will be held at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, 705 Davie Avenue, Statesville, NC, on Friday, November 15 at 11:00 am, with visitation to follow. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 16 at 1:00 pm at Blue Ridge Garden of Memory, 994 Hendersonville Hwy, Pisgah Forest, NC.
Bonnie McLelland Harmon’s memory will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew her. Her family is particularly grateful for the loving support of her wonderful care team over the last two years.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Bonnie’s memory to contribute to The Giles Harmon Memorial Scholarship Fund, 600 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805, to continue her support of young people entering the field of law enforcement.
