Mike was born in Seattle, WA and was raised in Merritt Island, FL. He attended Embry-Riddle University in Daytona, FL, where he studied Avionic Electrical Engineering. He served in the United States Air Force, during which time he was stationed in Indiana and Washington, DC. Mike moved to Savannah in 1980 and also lived in Richmond Hill before moving to Statesboro 15 years ago. He had been employed with Gulfstream Aerospace for 31 years, where he was an Avionic Electrical Engineer. He attended Compassion Christian Church, Lifespring Church and was a member of the Band of Brothers Men’s Group. Mike loved all things related to airplanes and was an avid motorcycle rider and was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Lavern Leonard Phipps.
Mike is survived by his wife, Karen L. Phipps of Statesboro; daughter, Ashley Melson of Charleston, SC; step-son, Bryan Bailey and his wife, Katy of Savannah; brother, John L. Phipps and his wife, Loni of Cocoa, FL; father-in-law, Jim Amsden of Pooler; brother-in-law, Jimmy Amsden and his wife Lori of Pittsburg, PA; sister-in-law, Sandy McGrogan and her husband Rich of Pooler; several nieces and nephews and other “adopted” children.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, November 21, 2014 in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 22, 2014 in the Chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with the Reverend Dorsia Atkinson officiating.
