Mary Catherine attended the University of California, Berkley, majoring in English. She met her husband, Lindsay Stephens, who was stationed with the Strategic Air Command, U.S. Air Force in California. She spent 24 years traveling to various Strategic Air Command bases with him as a wife and mother of four children. During this period, she was very active in the American Red Cross and various military wives’ organizations assisting spouses whose husbands had either gone to war (Korean and Vietnam) or temporary military duty in foreign countries. After her husband had passed away, she developed and became the general agent and broker of a successful insurance agency. She loved to monitor world events and political happenings in the United States. Her biggest love was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Rose and Albert Nelson, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, her husband, and a son, Richard Stephens. Mary Catherine is survived by her sons, Dr. James Stephens (Mary Linda) cand Mark Stephens (Cindy), daughter, Linda Pritchard (Marcus) and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Stephens. She had 11 grandchildren: Robert William Stephens (Carolyn), Craig Lindsay Stephens, Eric Leo Stephens (Rosanna), Angela Marie Tanner (Michael), Rev. Michael Jason Stephens (Valerie Joy), John Christopher Stephens (Tiffany Nicole), Mary Catherine Pritchard, Leah Christine Pritchard, April Templeton (Tim), Brian Stephens, and Tiffany Schanck (Justin). She also had 17 great-grandchildren: Emily Marie Stephens, Julian Wolf Stephens, Jacob Thomas Tanner, Kylee Elizabeth Tanner, Mark Ezekiel Stephens, Isaiah Thomas Stephens, David Zechariah Stephens, Timothy Micah Stephens, Benjamin Peter Stephens, Lynnlee Addison Stephens, Christopher Michael Stephens, Conner Matthew Stephens, Matthew Edward Templeton, Noah William Templeton, Avalynn Faith Schanck, Lilia Grace Schanck and Brynlee Elizabeth Schanck. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Funeral mass services will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, May 16 in St. Matthew Catholic Church with the Reverend Douglas Clark officiating. A graveside service will be held later in Jacksonville, Florida, where she will be interred with her husband.
The Stephens, Pritchard, Tanner, Templeton and Schanck families wish to express their sincere appreciation to Ms. Grace Holloway, LPN, and the staff and management of Gentilly Gardens, to Ms. Debbie Vaughn, RN, and the Ogeechee Area Hospice staff and to her personal physician, Dr. Marie Moogerfeld, and her staff, for their care and love.
