The Chatham County native moved to Stilson with her family as a child and attended Stilson School. She and her family later moved to Statesboro, where she graduated from The Lab School at Georgia Teacher’s College. She was a member of Pittman Park United Methodist Church, and previously a member of Langston United Methodist Church. Katherine was active in the Senior Center at the Statesboro Department of Parks and Recreation, where she looked forward to meeting with her friends. Katherine loved to sew, knit, crochet and in recent years she loved putting together puzzles. As a pastor’s wife, Katherine was very involved with the church and particularly the UMW and held many positions in that organization. As a mother she provided the family with much love and devotion.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Horace Bird; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Whaley, Sr.; two brothers, George Whaley, Jr. and Frank Whaley; two sisters, Eleanor Still and Hilda Wilson; son-in-law, Wendell Waters; and great-grandsons, Stephen Cepec and Joseph Pierson.
Mrs. Bird is survived by her twin daughters, Lannette Edenfield and her husband, Randy and Annette Waters; two sons, Carl Bird and his wife, Rita and Larry Bird and his wife, Sunshine; brothers, Donald Whaley and his wife, Jan and Johnny Whaley; sister, Sue Whaley Brannen and her husband, Bill all of Statesboro; sisters-in-law, Caroline Whaley of Statesboro and Elsie Whaley of Pooler; eight grandchildren, Keith Edenfield and his wife, Angie, Dianne Schol and her husband, Rusty, Sandra Cepec and her husband, Ralph, Debra Pierson and her husband, Clay, Rhonda Bird, David Bird and his wife, Wendy, Christie Williams and her husband, David and Karen Gore and her husband, Jason; 20 great-grandchildren; great-granddaughter-in-law, Melanie Cepec; and several and nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 5:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday, February 15th in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, February 16th in Pittman Park United Methodist Church with Reverend Bill Bagwell and Reverend David Blalock officiating.
Mrs. Bird will lie in state one hour prior to the service, in the church.
Burial will follow in Middleground Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Bird, Keith Edenfield, Nickolas (Nick) Edenfield, Nathaniel Schol, Daniel Pierson and Samuel Cepec.
