Born in New Brighton, Tom grew up by Jones Woods and at fourteen got his first job life guarding at Goodhue baby pool. By 17, he was promoted to chief life guard of the Parks Department in Great Kills. Tom graduated from Curtis high school in 1948 where he played football and was on the swim team.
While attending Wagner College, Tom served as swim instructor for the NYC Board of Education. He then went on to organize and become Director of the aquatic program at the YMCA.
In October of 1954, Tom was appointed to the Fire Department of New York. He wore many hats including chauffeur, pump operator, a member of Rescue 1, lieutenant and finally retiring after 35 years of service as captain of Engine 152.
Tom met his wife Arlene in Upstate New York and later settled on Staten Island together. The couple celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on July 2nd. Together they had the opportunity to travel all over the world. They had two children together, Steven and Paul Bonamo
Tom is predeceased by his parents Thomas Sr. and Antionette Bonamo, and two sons Steven and Paul Bonamo.
Tom is the beloved husband of Arlene Bonamo. Brother in Law to Eleanor Traub and Allen Foertch. Father in Law to Carole Vitale Bonamo. Grandfather to Steven Bonamo and Marina Bonamo Almodovar, husband Robert Almodovar. Loving Great grandfather to Olivia and Sophia Almodovar. Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
