Rita Marie Lindsey (née Byrne), 82, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on December 7, 2024, surrounded by the love of her children. Rita was known for her deep love of family, her warmth, and her endless capacity to listen.
Born on September 24, 1942, on Staten Island, Rita spent her early years in New Brighton where she enjoyed living on the same block as many of her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She often remarked that it was a wonderful way to grow up, an experience that instilled in her an exceptional love of family and close connection to her nearly one hundred first cousins. Later, she moved to West Brighton and an apartment above the family-owned business, Byrne’s Laundry and Linen Supply. She attended St. Peter’s
Girls High School where she relished spending time with her friends, listening to Elvis, and being a self-proclaimed rebel.
In her early twenties, Rita married and started her family. She adored her children and created precious memories for them, celebrating holidays and milestones with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Her home was filled with music and laughter, and her door was always open, especially to her cherished brother Michael, whom she cared for and advocated for throughout his entire life. Friends were also welcome, and over the years many became part of the extended family and remained a part of her life even till the end. She could always be counted on to lift those around her with her inexhaustible capacity to listen and an endless supply of sympathy.
Rita also worked for many years at the Staten Island Medical Group - HIP. While there, she embraced the opportunity to provide support to patients and their families through her role as administrative assistant in the lab. After surviving two bouts with breast cancer, she started a breast cancer support group at the center, a labor of love that provided great comfort not only to the patients she served but to her as well.
When the time came for Rita to retire, she welcomed the opportunity to spend her days caring for and spending time with her beloved grandchildren, among whom there was constant competition over who was the favorite and who could make her laugh the hardest. Near the end of her life, Rita and her family were blessed to have the loving and compassionate support of her dear caregivers Josephine, Diana, Crystal, Christina, Mimi, Kay, Chan, Sheena, Marilyn, and Sheema, her nurse practitioner Rachel, and all of her therapists at Fox Rehab. Her family will be forever grateful to them.
Rita was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Rita Byrne, and her brothers Joseph Byrne Jr. and Michael Byrne and her sister Jacqueline Ryan. She is survived by her three children, Rita DiDomenico (Michael), Lisa Carp (Daniel), and Thomas Lindsey; eight grandchildren, Aubrey Carp (Jordan), Sean Carp, Michael DiDomenico (Danielle), Jamie Dantuono (Nicholas), Sarah Boughton (Brian), Thomas Lindsey, Christopher DiDomenico, and Abbey Lindsey; two great-grandchildren Harrison Carp-Schursky and Bennett Boughton; her sister-in-law Johanna Byrne; and her many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
