The third of 6 siblings (2 sisters and 3 brothers…born in that order), Maureen was born in the Bronx, NY, on June 14, 1938, to Thomas Benedict Hurley and Ann Mariah Hurley (nee Smith), and was raised in the Bronx and on Staten Island, NY, before moving in 1983 with her mother, to Indianapolis, IN, where she was a faithful member of St. Pius X Catholic church. She then relocated in July 2018 with her sister Ann Patricia “Pat” Cornelia (nee Hurley) from Indianapolis to Mt. Juliet, TN to live closer to her niece, Joan Cornelia-Wallace, where she resided at Maristone at Providence Senior Living until her death.
Maureen attended St. Peter’s Elementary School and St. Joseph’s Hill Academy High School on Staten Island, New York. After working for a time in an administrative capacity at Domino Sugar in Manhattan, NY, Maureen attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey where she achieved a BS in Nursing. Maureen worked for many years at the former St. Vincent’s Hospital on Staten Island, and subsequently deployed her nursing expertise in various private duty nursing positions, both on Staten Island and in Indianapolis, before retiring from the healthcare field during the late, first decade of the 2000’s.
Maureen had an artistic bent, and enjoyed painting and many other crafts.
Maureen was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Pat Cornelia, Joan A. Hurley of Manhattan, NY; brother, Thomas (Gigi) Hurley Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; sister-in-law, Diane (Joseph) Burgess-Hurley of Conroe, TX; and great-nephew, Vaughn Robert Cornelia of Mt. Juliet, TN.
Maureen is survived by her brothers, Gerard (Maggie Amrhein) Hurley of Huntington, NY; Joseph D. Hurley of Conroe, TX; cousin, Dr. Peter Di Napoli of Palm Harbor, FL; nephews and nieces, Robert E. (WJ Miller) Cornelia III of San Diego, CA; Joseph E. (Barbara Wambo-Cornelia) Cornelia of West Chester, OH; Joan E. (Ray) Cornelia-Wallace of Mt. Juliet, TN; Jessica “J’amy”(Mark) Pietrowicz of Sanford, NC; Meredith A. Hurley of Greenlawn, NY; Gerard Hurley Jr. of Commack, NY; Ryan (Concetta Pena-Hurley) Hurley; Joseph (Susan) D. Hurley Jr. of Conroe, TX; great-nephews and great-nieces, Ryan J. Cornelia (Julia Winch-Cornelia) of greater Cincinnati, OH; Mark Pietrowicz, Joshua Pietrowicz and Jake Pietrowicz, of Sanford, NC, Alicia Hurley and Derek Hurley of Northport, NY, and Sara Kathryn of Conroe, TX; great-great niece, Sophia Ann Cornelia of greater Atlanta, GA, as well as many friends and colleagues.
A big thank you for the great care provided, during the last year or so, by Zinah and Judy, who were her exceptional and compassionate caregivers from Amada Senior Care, and thanks also to various caregivers over the years from Maristone at Providence Senior Living, and Adoration Hospice.
Visitation for Maureen will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2021, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10310. Following the visitation, grave site services and burial shall take place at St. Peter's Cemetery, from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Peter's Cemetery, 52 Tyler Ave, Staten Island, NY 10310.
