STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Staten Islander Margaret Gilhooley Dempsey, 75, of New Springville, an office manager renowned for her Irish soda bread, died March 15 in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born Margaret Mahoney in the Bronx, she came to Staten Island in 1957. She lived in Grasmere before relocating to New Springville in 1997.
Mrs. Dempsey was an office manager in the brokerage industry in Lower Manhattan for three decades, retiring in 1997.
She continued to work part-time in that capacity in a medical office on Staten Island, and was still working at the time of her death.
In her leisure time, Mrs. Dempsey enjoyed reading. She also liked to knit and crochet for her grandchildren. She was known for hosting Thanksgiving and St. Patrick's Day dinners for her family, and was noted for her delicious Irish soda bread.
Her first husband of 22 years, Francis P. Gilhooley, died in 1979.
Her second husband of less than a year, Alfred Dempsey, died in 1990.
She is survived by a son, Steven Gilhooley; a step-son, Paul Dempsey; two daughters, Eileen Cro and Kathleen Pugliese; two step-daughters, Diane Murray and Christine Dempsey, and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a mass at noon in St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills. Arrangements include cremation.
