STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander Lisa Morrongiello, 57, of Eltingville, an artist who inspired many with her bright outlook and lively attitude, died Tuesday at Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.
Born in Dongan Hills, she settled to Eltingville in 1959.
Ms. Morrongiello attended the School of Art and Design in Manhattan, and later graduated from SUNY Purchase as an art major.
She was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1982, a typically fatal disease which Ms. Morrongiello managed to survive for many years. Undaunted by her illness, she maintained a proclivity for enjoying life — whether it was with a good cup of coffee, a game of Scrabble or time spent with her nieces and nephews.
"Someone else would quit, but not her," said her sister, Margaret Haynes. "She was not your shrinking violet."
Ms. Morrongiello volunteered at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, where she worked to comfort and cheer-up cancer patients. She had a passion for painting, often participating in art shows on the Island, and also loved listening to music and attending live shows.
She is survived by her mother, Martha Morrongiello; her brothers, Tom and Philip, and her sisters, Margaret Haynes and Claudia Henry.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills.
