My grandma, Josephine was a wonderful lady, who lived along content life. Although life was not always fair or easy for her, she never complained she took the punches and kept on going. Divorced young, she was a single mom who loved and raised her boys on her own. Later in life, she babysat and became a bus matron. She loved working with little kids growing up. She was the perfect grandma. She would take me shopping to the malls where she love to buy clothes. Always had an elegant style, matching her jewelry and make up. She also loves to cook and bake many nights watching me. She had the patience of the saint with letting me make a mess in her kitchen as we baked cookies and I had flour all over her kitchen! Making her Thanksgiving soup while I rolled her little meatballs, too big, she would let me roll and she would fix them never yelling I was in her way.
She also took care of her only grandson, Michael. She took buses to pick him up from school and be there for him anyway that she could. She walked and took buses everywhere. She could possibly go when my boys were born she would play with them and had a glow with them. She just love little children.
She went to church every Sunday until she couldn’t anymore, she was a devout Catholic her entire life. She had a tendency to buy any necessities on sale. When she moved from one apartment to the next, she had a closet full of toilet paper and shampoo all lined up like a grocery store! She changed her curtains and bedding to go along with the seasons. She took pride in her home and herself.
She buried her oldest son, my dad, Vito, and said he was such a good boy! A perfect son. She never once saw any bed in her children. She loved her, “Richie boy” and always wanted the best for him and wanted him to be OK in life. My little Mema was a great lady truly just appreciated the little she had and loved the holiday decorating for every holiday made her happy.
I will always remember the great memories and the love you gave me. Always calling me, your “sweetheart” even when times I was not! Rest Mema! We will love and miss you!
