John Mondelli was born in Brooklyn ninety years ago and came to Staten Island with his parents, Frank and Pauleen when he was sixteen. He graduated from McKee High School where he met his lifelong friends, and was later drafted into the Army during the Korean War. After being trained as a medic, he served for two years at the Army hospital in Camp Pickett in Virginia. Upon leaving the Army, John was employed by N.Y.C Health & Hospital Corporation at Sea View Hospital & Home. He stayed there for 38 years successfully completing examinations and earning promotions to the position of Carpenter and then to the position of Foreman of Carpenters. He was also an accomplished real estate invester. Upon retirement, he continued to stay busy by joining the Kiwanis Club and American Legion, enjoying his grandchildren, traveling to many places, including Europe, especially Italy, Disneyworld, and cruising. He also enjoyed walking two miles every day.
John was a family man who is survived by the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Norma, two sons, Bob and Frank, four grandchildren, Kristin, John, Stephen, and Tara. One sister, Grace Magrino, and many nieces and nephews. His brother, Mickey, pre-deceased him. John loved spending time with his grandchildren, who will remember him as the best grandpa who gave them all the love and care they could ever ask for. He had the kindest face and most infectious smile, and you felt lucky just to get a few minutes to sit down and chat with him.
