He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and John Patrick McGreevy. John served in the U.S. Army National Guard for six years as a tank mechanic and a sharp-shooter. He earned two Master’s Degrees and went on to teach social studies in the New York City school system for over 30 years at Tilden and Tottenville High Schools. John enlivened his instruction with his quick-witted sense of humor, which was vividly recalled by his former students.
Upon retirement, several of his colleagues and he met for breakfast once a month, Retired Old Men Eating Out (ROMEOs). As a hobby, he collected fine glassware from the Depression Era. He was an avid and knowledgeable gardener, a true Mets fan and enjoyed Rutgers Basketball. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. John also maintained an abiding interest in American Civil War history, including visiting numerous battlefield sites on their honeymoon!
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Diane Trombino, and by his son, John Austen McGreevy, daughter-in-law, Kirthi Reddy, and by two grandchildren, Isaac Zuben and Maya Novella, as well as by his sister, Valerie McGreevy, and brother-in-law, George J. Billy, and their daughters, Margaret, her daughter Camilla, and daughter Christine, and her son Connor. He will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew him well and is sadly missed.
A visitation for John will be held Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314.
A mass of Christian burial will occur Monday, October 28, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Teresa's Church, 1634 Victory Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10314.
A committal service will occur Monday, October 28, 2024 from 11:15 AM to 11:45 AM at The Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th St, New York, NY 11232.
